Nils Norman surrounds John James Baker’s paintiing The Whig Junta, a portrait evocative of power and status, with a wallpaper of pamphlets by radical voices of the time and the counter-propaganda of their opponants. These groups attempted to transform society in response to the English Civil War (1642-51). Parliament relaxed censorship rules in England between 1640 and 1660. This allowed previously silenced groups to disseminate their ideas through self-published pamphlets and newspapers.

The four furniture pieces represent buildings that would have been familiar to people of that time and where many of the texts would have either been read aloud or posted on the walls: Banqueting House, with the temporary outdoor platform upon which King Charles I was executed; St Mary’s Church, Putney, where the Levellers met and where the the Putney Debates were held; Bishopsgate; and two imaginary pubs.

Fragments of spoken text, taken from the pamphlets, emanate from the furniture at different times.
Sparkles of Glory is part of the major rehang of Tate Britain's collection.
