Francis Hunger is an artist and researcher, investing into histories of technology as an expression of power constellations. Currently he is researcher and university teacher for Emergent Digital Media at Art Academy Munich and co-editor of the online journal https://www.carrier-bag.net. He is PostDoc at the project Dataunion at VUB Brussels. In 2021–2023 Francis was a researcher for the project Training The Archive at Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund, and Ludwig Forum Aachen, critically examining the use of AI, statistics and pattern recognition for art and curating. In winter semester 2022/23 Francis was guest professor at the Intermedia program of the Hungarian Academy for Visual Arts, Budapest.
Hunger worked as junior curator at Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dormund in 2005-2008. He was teaching at art academy Burg Giebichenstein Halle/Saale 2008–2017. During 2015–2022 his Ph.D. research focused on the emergence of relational database technology at Bauhaus University, Weimar.
Hunger is author of numerous media science papers and an internationally active artist.
