Schirin Kretschmann works at the intersection of painting and installation and performance art. Her works emerge from her observation of situations, materials and existing structures, transforming them through minimal interventions, traces of colour and painterly gestures. In this way, places become living structures in which perception, movement and social and political forces can be experienced through the senses.
Schirin Kretschmann (born 1980 in Karlsruhe) studied Fine Art, Art Education and German Studies in Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Basel and Weimar. She completed her PhD at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with a thesis on “Painting within an expanded framework of action, with reference to Barnett Newman and Hélio Oiticica”. Since the early 2000s, she has developed works for public spaces as well as international galleries and institutions (Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Kunstverein Hannover, Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur, Kunsthaus Baselland, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Kunstverein Salzburg, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Quito, among others) and has received numerous awards (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, SNF doctoral grant / eikones Institute for Visual Criticism at the University of Basel, BS-Projects – Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, Mathilde Planck Teaching Fellowship Programme LaKof BW, among others). In artistic and curatorial research projects such as ‘Präparat Bergsturz’ (Bern University of the Arts), ‘six memos for the next ...’ (Magazin4 Bregenzer Kunstverein), “Werkstatt Morsbroich” (Museum Morsbroich Leverkusen) or “Stille Materialität der Zeit” (DFG Research Group “Imaginarien der Kraft”, University of Hamburg), she has worked on transdisciplinary methods of visualisation and cognition. Schirin Kretschmann has taught at international design and art colleges and has been Professor of Painting and Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich since 2020.
