"To be an animal, to be glass, to be things that are not only human. This lecture is about the Ungeziefer, the animal, the vermin—a word from history indicating subjugation. It is the fifth iteration of a performative lecture I've been doing since 2020. The focus stems from understanding that to research history is to research the self, to investigate the conditions that enable you to be here. This is an ontological experience, and for me, the experience of being Jewish, and to ask: How can I transform or escape a trap of my own making? And what, if any, is the potential of existential exile from the self, or from the self as a political object?

Joshua Leon lives and works in Vienna. His practice explores how archival remembrance, historical research, autobiography and memoir fall into each other. He is currently working on exhibitions at Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, and Portikus, Frankfurt, and at the Musée National de l’histoire de l’immigration, Paris."
