Sculpture
Portrait of the class
Klasse Kuri starts by conceiving the practice of sculpture as an open ended discipline to engage critically with the tangible world. Thinking through making, thinking with form, relying on hands, tools and other extensions of our limbs as instruments of reason in its enquiry of reality.
"I encourage a dynamic enquiry that actively pivots between work place and public space. Regardless of what ideas, forms and materials each student may engage with, it is in the touching down with the reality outside the studio space that the work finds its relevance. So, while fostering the cultivation of technique and self discipline at the Academy, I encourage students to regularly step outside of their work place and assess the ways in which their forms engage with public life. We will constantly put ourselves in places and situations closely related or seemingly removed from the conventions of sculptural practice in order to shed a dynamic light on the potential of this artistic discipline. We will bring questions from the outside world into the implications of studio practice, and likewise bounce off those questions from studio practice back onto public life."
"My class will instigate debate and reference to art theory and art histories as these stem from practice in the studio. We will let the specificity of formal enquiry and the immediacy of first hand experience point at the aspects of art theory and art history that feel relevant to study and discuss. We will constantly assess how our practice positions each one of us in place and time, and the potential of our discipline to provide with a life long instrument to deal with the complexities of tangible reality."
