The courses offered by the Chairs of Art History are aimed at students in the Fine Art classes as well as students of Art Education, Interior Architecture and postgraduate programmes. They include lectures on the cultural history of art from early civilisations to the present day, as well as seminars that tie in with current artistic discourse. The involvement of lecturers from the museum and exhibition sector guarantees a very practical education in which the structures and processes of the ‘functional system of art’ are examined.

The aim of the department is not only to impart traditional art historical and art theoretical knowledge. It also aims to discuss the intellectual and political backgrounds of cultural phenomena, values and power structures and to encourage students to reflect on and contextualise their own artistic work.

The department focuses on modern and contemporary art, the theory and practice of art in public spaces, and interdisciplinary issues. In addition to lectures and seminars, regular excursions are offered and exhibitions, symposia and lectures are organised, which are also open to the interested public.
