The departments of Philosophy | Aesthetic Theory and Philosophy of Technology and Media offer a wide range of courses on classical and contemporary positions in philosophy, aimed at students of all levels and degree programmes. The introductory courses and seminars convey fundamental questions and concepts, but always aim to highlight the connection between historical and current discourses as well as artistic production itself, and to question their relevance and updating: from Plato's mimesis to Walter Benjamin's essay on the aesthetics of the digital. In addition, we also attach importance to diversifying the course content and including authors who are often not considered part of the canonised philosophical tradition. Discussions of current artistic positions, visits to exhibitions and presentations by theorists and artists are integral parts of the course offerings.
Beyond regular teaching, philosophy at the Academy is accompanied by international lecture series, workshops, and collaborations with museums, universities, and research institutes. In addition, there are constantly changing teaching assignments that complement and enrich the curriculum. In future, there will also be a philosophy colloquium (again), which will offer a cross-class, open space for discussing student work and will also focus on promoting student writing.
The subject areas covered by the chairs include: political aesthetics, theories of mediality, aesthetic positions in contemporary art, materialist aesthetics, theories of form, philosophy of technology, critique of power and social theory, post-coloniality and decolonisation.
