If you did not obtain your higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad, you must go through the same multi-stage admission procedure as all applicants. A description of the procedure and the application requirements can be found under this link.

Submission requirements for an application are detailed on our application checklist.

How should foreign certificates be submitted?
– Certified copy of a general or subject related university entrance qualification in the original language (may consist of multiple components and include a university admissions examination)
– Certified translation of the university entrance qualification (certificates in English do not require translation)
– Certified copies of all university certificates, degree certificates and, if available, diploma supplements in the original language and in certified translation (certificates in English do not require translation)

Please note that for an official application, all translations must be done by an official translator that is accredited by the German Foreign Office.

For students from China and Mongolia: please be aware for APS-Certificate.

Who must submit which German language certificate?
Foreign students who have completed their previous education abroad (excluding German-speaking countries and accredited German schools abroad) must submit a verifiable German language certificate at the level specified below. German Language certificates must be verifiable. This means that the authenticity of the certificate can be checked. Certificates that cannot be proofed by the academy will not be accepted. The Academy of Fine Arts therefore recommends the following certificate providers with regard to verifiability (DSH, TestDaF, telc, Goethe Certificate; European Language Certificate, German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education; German Language Examination II of the Language and Interpreting Institute, Austrian Language Diploma). Also accepted are diplomas from a German higher education institution (at least at the level of a Gymnasium, a Studienkolleg, a Fachhochschule, or a Hochschule) or a corresponding diploma from Austria, Luxembourg, South Tyrol, or German-speaking Switzerland for proven German-language courses of study, as well as a “Mixed Language International Baccalaureate at foreign schools with German instruction” (GIB) if the IB subjects biology and history were taught in German.

C1 certificate: for the Master's program in Bildnerisches Gestalten und Therapie and the State Examination in Kunstpädagogik. This certificate must be submitted with the application for the Master's program in Bildnersiches Gestalten und Therapie.

B2 certificate: Applicants for the Interior Design and Master's in Architecture and Art programs must provide proof of at least level B2.

B1 certificate: Applicants for Fine Arts must provide proof of level B1. It is possible to apply for the Fine Arts program with an A2 language certificate, but the B1 language certificate must be submitted within one year by means of a verifiable document (see above), otherwise the applicant will be immediately de-registered.

Your graduating certificate may or may not automatically qualify you to begin a degree course at a German university. The recognition of foreign certificates and diplomas is done by the Admissions Office of the academy as part of the admission procedure. The Admissions Office reserves the right to require a recognition notification from the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bayern (ZASt) in individual cases, without being required to state reasons.
