"The Mnemosyne.Atlas.Läb is an artistic-scientific event format co-founded by Philipp Schwalb that is dedicated to the relevance and reactivation of Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas. For each Läb, artists are invited to work on a thematic focus from the atlas as part of their artistic practice: for #33, it is the artist Merve Kılıçer on “matrix.” We begin with a general introduction by Philipp Schwalb to the Mnemosyne.Atlas and the Image Constellation Panels (I-C-P), as well as to the appearance of the figure of the mother and other care figures in it. This will be followed by Merve Kılıçer's I-C-P When the Gods Have Been Done in the form of a lecture performance. Merve Kılıçer examines the historical and contemporary landscapes of Western Anatolia along the traces of active mining sites for coal, gold, and limestone, as well as the remains of shrines that were built for Cybele, the archaic goddess of Anatolia. The figure of the mother goddess Cybele thus becomes the starting point for a transmedial, critical visualization of cultural-historical overlaps, such as the appropriation and transfer of Anatolian myth-making by Greek mythologies, and the figuration of Cybele as Magna Mater. Four plates from the Mnemosyne Atlas (5, 41, 73, and 77), in particular the figure of Medea, serve as an outlook and basis for subsequent discussion.

Workshop mit Philipp Schwalb zu Image-Constellation-Panels

Ausgangspunkt ist zunächst der Begriff des „Materials“ – gedacht in seiner etymologischen Nähe zu Matrix und Mater, also als Ursprung des Sichtbaren, als Produzentin der Bildwerdung. Am Vormittag installieren wir die Tafeln 5, 41, 73 und 77 und befragen sie nach den ikonographischen und kulturellen Tiefenstrukturen des Mutterbildes und wie diese im Atlas sichtbar werden. Gemeinsam überführen wir die mythologischen Darstellungen des Mutterseins in seiner dramatischen, ambivalenten Beziehung von Fürsorge, Schutz und Verlust in die gegenwärtige Situation unseres Zusammenseins/Konstellierens.
Wir dekodieren, dekonstruieren und dekomponieren die Atlas-Tafeln und finden neue Wege sie zu nutzen, zu aktualisieren und kritisch zu betrachten. Dabei geht es vor allem darum, das Spielerische des gemeinsamen Bilderhängens, Umhängens, des Konstellierens eben, als eine kollektive, prozessuale Praxis kennenzulernen.
Für die Nachmittags-Session bitten wir die Teilnehmer*innen 1-3 Bilder, Kunstwerke oder Objekte mitzubringen, die entweder einen Bezug zur Fürsorge-Thematik, zum Mnemosyne Atlas und/oder zur eigenen künstlerischen Praxis haben. Die von uns installierten Tafeln dienen uns dabei als Hintergrundrauschen zu den mitgebrachten Bildern/Objekten. Damit schaffen wir neue Bedeutungen und Formen, die ein gemeinsames Vorgehen voraussetzen, unterstützen, thematisieren und Synergien zwischen Bild-produzenten*innen provozieren.
Der Workshop richtet sich an alle Interessierte und erfordert keine besonderen Kenntnisse. Allerdings ist die Teilnehmer*innen Anzahl auf 25 Personen begrenzt. Anmeldungen bitte an
