The Shape of Stars: A History of Star-Image Formation

Bertrand Russell and the Edwardian Philosophers (2008) erhielt den Book of the Year Award der Bertrand Russell Society. Observing by Hand: Sketching the Nebulae in the Nineteenth Century (2013) wurde mit dem Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award und dem Pfizer Prize der History of Science Society ausgezeichnet. The Astronomer's Chair: A Visual and Cultural History (2021) wurde international vielfach rezensiert und ins Chinesische übersetzt."

In this talk, we will explore the different ways that stars have been visualised, with an emphasis on their material production and qualities. From navigational star maps to star charts, the star image has transformed in important ways, reflecting shifting cultural and epistemic expectations and purposes. The talk will go through this history in order to finally bring out the exceptional qualities of photographic star-images and the challenges they posed to astronomers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The formation of the star-image, as a material but also as a cosmic phenomena, blurred the lines between the science of the stars and the science of photography.

Omar W. Nasim is Professor of the History of Science at the University of Regensburg, where he holds the Professorship for the History of Science within the Institute of Philosophy. He completed a Bachelor’s degree with honours in Philosophy and Physics at the University of Manitoba, followed by a doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He obtained his Habilitation in the History of Science and Technology at ETH Zurich in 2012. Prior to his appointment at Regensburg in 2016, he held research and teaching positions and fellowships at various international institutions. His three monographs have each received major recognition. Bertrand Russell and the Edwardian Philosophers (2008) won the Bertrand Russell Society's Book of the Year Award. Observing by Hand: Sketching the Nebulae in the Nineteenth Century (University of Chicago Press, 2013), supported by a Getty Foundation grant, won both the Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award and the History of Science Society's Pfizer Prize (2016), the field's highest distinction for a scholarly monograph. The Astronomer's Chair: A Visual and Cultural History (MIT Press, 2021) has been widely reviewed internationally and translated into Chinese by CITIC Press.
