"The lecture will present the historical development of painting materials, from traditional media to modern synthetic materials in contemporary art. Physical and chemical properties of painting materials. Case studies of artists using new painting materials.

Katarína Balúnová (1982) is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator, and scholar whose practice explores the material and spatial possibilities of utopian and speculative spiritual visions within contemporary urban and ecological contexts. Working across painting, performance, installation, video, and poetry, she investigates cyclical time as a lived, embodied rhythm, reconfiguring the boundaries between body, habitat, and collective myth.

Her projects have been exhibited in national and international contexts including the Shanghai Paper Art Biennale (2025), 11th Asia-Europe Mediations Biennale Kunsthalle Hannover (2025), MACVAC Contemporary Art Museum, Spain (2024), Something Else Off Biennale Cairo (2023), Riga Art Space, Latvia (2021), Kohta Kunsthalle, Finland (2021), Ely Center of Contemporary Art, USA (2021), Czong Institute for Contemporary Art, South Korea (2021), Dafen Art Museum, Shenzhen (2020), Mark Rothko Art Centre, Latvia (2017), 6th Beijing International Art Biennale (2015) and others.

Balúnová completed postdoctoral research at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna (2025) and at the Academy of Fine Arts Prague (2021-2022), following her doctoral studies at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia.

She is a visiting DAAD research fellow in residence at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich during this summer semester (in collaboration with Prof. Andrea Büttner, Studienwerkstatt für Maltechnik and the International Office)."
