"Our Sculpture class maintains a committed, if not tenuous link to the discipline of sculpture. Hence, Sculpture remains on our doors underneath my name, Gerry Bibby.

Inhabiting an Institution built from European inventions more than 200 years ago, we attempt to think our occupations; inevitably entangled in those times, as opportunities for thinking, digesting, responding to, & occupying space.

This is the work of Sculpture.
Watch out!
You may trip over an object as you stand back to look at an image hanging on a wall –– that image may even be a person performing something physical that you want to flatten into the containable space of your phone.

Space & the/a body’s encounters with not only Education & its procedures, but with materials & the other places, corners, or events that each & every artist, student & citizen is compelled to relate to… in time, directs the class’ focus.

Our activities in the class are driven by the schedules of the Akademie’s own. These seasonal turns can however invite routines that each & every participant in the class’ ecology can contribute to. Singular & collective engagements that we are willing to confront are experimented with so as to respond to the worlds we inhabit.

These processes offer opportunities for thinking shapes & utterances we can digest together in the rooms designated as ours in Munich. They may even appear as other than sculpture & may extend beyond those rooms. They involve reading & looking at art: including each others, or welcome guests whose practices expand our understandings, yet our questions are most definitely spatial & relational.

The planet is large & yet shrinks & expands elastically. The politics of destruction & amnesia do not halt. Those of attraction & interest also do not expire.

… if I/we could drive a car or bus, how would I/we behave whilst looking for a parking space? Would, or could, I/we simply decide to stop the bus once I/we have been mesmerised by a detail neither the steering wheel or window can contain? Would we stop driving altogether & exit the vehicle?

Let’s reflect on these fields with sensitivity & searing contemplation together.
