Porträt der Klasse / Portrait of the class

Klasse Norman is a class led by Professor Nils Norman and co-worker Justin Lieberman.

Both Norman and Lieberman are practicing artists with more than 30 years of teaching experience between them. The class is structured around a series of Monday Class Week presentations by students of the class.

Self-organisation, self-motivation, student led learning and group projects are foregrounded in class and Norman and Lieberman encourage and support students to develop their own initiatives, exhibitions and projects.

Self-organisation is key to developing a strong methodology as a professional artist. One example of this is the Optimus Prime Mobile Kitchen: a collaborative project in the form of a specially designed cargo bike. The kitchen is used for class dinners, parties and out of school food related events. This project has been developed and is organised by Leonie Brehorst, Lea Geerkens, Justin Lieberman, Nils Norman and Tamara Reith.

Tuesdays of the Class Week are dedicated to the meeting of smaller support groups. These include the First Year Group, the Graduation Group and the Kleinewand Exam Group. These meetings help students to prepare for upcoming exams; act as discussion forums; enable information sharing and prepare new students for what is required of them in their first year at school. The Graduation Group also shares ideas for their theses and graduation exams. Wednesdays of the Class Week are dedicated to one to one studio visits where students can sign up with Norman and Lieberman for meetings to discuss their work.

The class has developed its own outdoor space in the form of a small forest garden and greenhouse/classroom on campus that consists of fruit trees and bushes; perennial vegetables; vermiculture; dry composting; and dead hedge composting. Each year a mushroom growing course is given to new students. The Garden Group meets regularly to tend the garden and class dinners are also organised using produce from the garden.
