The application deadline is May 15th at 3pm of every year. Late applications will not be considered. The Office of Academic Affairs starts to accept complete applications from the beginning of March until 15th of May, 3pm.
Students may only apply for admission to one field of specialization.
The following documents must be included in the application:
1. A portfolio of the applicant’s own artistic work (the portfolio and all included pieces must be labelled with the applicant’s name)
2. A signed declaration (Mappenerklärung) that the submitted work has been produced independently
3. General or subject-related higher education entrance qualification and university certificates (see information below)
4. Mandatory pre-study practical internship or proof of vocational training (see information below)
5. The complete application form
6. Complete CV without gaps up to the date of application submission plus one passport-size photo
7. Proof of German language abilities (see information below)
8. Only for Master´s degree programs: proof of completed Bachelor program
9. Only for applicants from China/ Mongolia/ Vietnam: APS certifikate
To 1.
There are no requirements and limitations for the portfolio as long as it does not exceed 90 cm in length and 90 cm in breadth. You may add drawings, drafts, sketchbooks, photographs of plastic works, or similar items but not more than three oil paintings. These materials must be submitted in a portfolio, not rolled, without glass or frame. A portfolio that is sent as a PDF or a CD may not be considered.
To 3.
General or subject-related higher education entrance qualification (for undergraduate courses):
- Certified copy of university entrance qualification in the original language (can comprise of different components and include a university admissions examination)
- Certified translation of the university entrance qualification (certificates in English do not require translation)
University certificates (for all degree courses):
- Certified copies of all university certificates, degree certificates and, if available, diploma supplements in the original language and in translation (if required, see above).
The Admissions Office reserves the right to require a recognition notification from Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bayern (ZASt) in individual cases without being required to state reasons.
To 4.
Mandatory pre-study practical internship (not for master´s degree program):
A mandatory pre-study practical internship of at least 8 weeks in a professional field related to the course of study is to be completed before the enrollment. Applicants that have completed a vocational training or have an art or art related degree are exempt from completing such an internship.
To 7.
German is the language of instruction in all programs at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.
If you wish to enroll in Art Education (Erstes Staatsexamen) or Interior Design (BA and MA) you must demonstrate German language abilities with a level that corresponds to level four (B2) on the six-level scale of competence stated in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
If you wish to enroll in Fine Arts you must demonstrate German language abilities with a level that corresponds to level B1 on the six-level-scale of comepetence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages till the beginning of semester. If you have a Level A2 language certificate the application is possible under the condition that Level B1 will be proven within one year. Otherwise an immediate exmatriculation will follow.
To 9.
In addition to meeting the standard application requirements of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, applicants from China/ Mongolia/ Vietnam must hand in the certificate of the Academic Evaluation Centre (Akademische Prüfstelle-APS) at he German Embassy in Beijing. Before applying to the Academy you must hand in your documentation to the Academic Evaluation Centre to receive the needed certificate. Please note that you may be invited to a personal interview.

ATTENTION Do not send any original certificates or original translations, as they will not be returned. The portfolio with artistic work remains in the Academy during the entire application period and cannot be made available to you, not even for a short period of time.
